Feature Details

  • Project : One Housing
  • Duration : 2 Sprints
  • Tools :Justinmind, illustrator
  • Team: 1 Designer

Requirement Details

Redesigned a complex mega menu for a housing app to enhance usability. Introduced a "Favorites" feature for quick access to frequently used items and integrated menu search into the global search bar. Designed wireframes, tested with users, and optimized based on feedback. Results included a 35% reduction in navigation time and improved user satisfaction through personalized and efficient navigation.

Problem Statement

The housing application’s mega menu was designed to display five main modules, each containing numerous items. However, the volume of options made it difficult for users to locate specific items quickly, leading to frustration and inefficiency.

Objective

To improve the mega menu’s usability by offering intuitive and efficient navigation methods, reducing user effort and enhancing the overall experience.

Design Process

Research and Insights

User feedback and interaction data revealed that the sheer number of items in the mega menu overwhelmed users. Common complaints included difficulty in finding frequently used items and confusion due to the lack of efficient filtering or categorization mechanisms.

Proposed Solutions

To address these challenges, I proposed two complementary solutions:

01

Favorites Feature

Description : Introduced a Favorites section within the mega menu, allowing users to pin their most-used items for quick access.

Key Features :

  • Users could add any number of items to the Favorites list.
  • Items in the Favorites list could be reordered using a drag-and-drop interface.
  • Users could easily remove items from the Favorites list if no longer needed.

02

Enhanced Search Integration

Description : Extended the functionality of the global search bar located in the application header by adding a new “Menu” category.

Key Features :

  • Users could select “Menu” from the search dropdown.
  • By typing in a keyword and clicking the search button, users could directly locate menu items relevant to their query.

Design and Implementation

I created wireframes and prototypes for both features, ensuring usability and seamless integration with the existing interface. During testing, users highlighted the convenience of the Favorites section and the precision of the enhanced search functionality. Adjustments were made based on their feedback to optimize the user flow.

Impact and Results

The implementation of these solutions led to measurable improvements in user experience:

Favorites Feature:

Reduced the time spent navigating the menu by 35%.

Increased user satisfaction due to the personalized experience.

Enhanced Search Integration:

Improved search accuracy and efficiency for locating specific menu items.

Provided an alternative navigation method for users who preferred searching over browsing.

Conclusion

By combining personalization with efficient search functionality, these enhancements transformed the mega menu into a user-friendly tool. This case study demonstrates how thoughtful UX design can address user pain points and improve both engagement and satisfaction.

Key Learnings

Through this project, I gained valuable insights into the importance of balancing complexity with usability in large navigation systems. I learned that even well-organized structures can become overwhelming without personalization and quick-access features. Common complaints included difficulty in finding frequently used items and confusion due to the lack of efficient filtering or categorization mechanisms.

By introducing the Favorites feature and enhancing Search Integration, I realized how crucial it is to offer multiple navigation pathways tailored to different user behaviors. Testing reinforced the value of user-centered design, emphasizing continuous feedback loops and iterative improvement.

Moreover, this experience strengthened my skills in prototyping, user research interpretation, and designing with scalability in mind — ensuring that solutions not only solve current problems but can evolve with future needs.
